| [ Carrot, marriage, borrow, sorrow, berry, merit, terrible, irritate, miracle, courage, cuurrent, furrow, etc.In these words the R is pronounced because it is not syllable-final; As the absence of Broadening is typical in words like carrot; where the R is followed by a pronounced vowel, this regular absence is usually referred to as the Carrot-Rule.The Carrot-Rule is often indicated in spelling by the doubling of the r. In GA, a few irregular words are exempt from it.Broadening takes place even though the following /r/ is not syllable-final.E.g., courage, currency, current, curry, hurry, worry, etc.The Carrot Rule doesn't block broadening when the r is followed by a vowel-initial productive suffix (ing, y). Look at these examples and compare! occur /əˈkɜː r / occurr+ence /əˈkʌr. ə n t s/ with ence suffix no broadening, but with ing suffix ,broadening takes place /əˈkɜː rɪŋ / . Same for bar /bɑ :r / barr+en /ˈbær. ə n/ , barring/ /bɑ :r rɪŋ/ , refer /rɪfɜ: r / referring /rɪfɜ:rɪŋ r / and fur /fɜ: r / furry /fɜ: ri /
